Any memorable stories you would like to share of your time at elc?
I feel like the most memorable story I had at elc was when we went on one of the field trips. On the way back to school on the bus, I was sleeping at the back, lying down and as the school bus turned a corner in a residential area, the emergency exit door flew open, letting me fly straight onto the road. Surprisingly, I was still asleep when I hit the tarmac. I went to hospital and that story comes up at least once or twice a year ever since in random conversations I have.
Did elc give you any valuable life lessons that shaped the way you conduct yourself today?
I think that school in general shapes you into the adult that you are – it teaches you social and discipline skills, and prepares you for appropriate behaviour in higher education and the real world. elc was a huge part of my life, seeing as I attended elc for 11 years; the majority of my youth surrounded this establishment. I learnt how to be sociable and how to make friends. I learnt a lot about responsibilities and how to manage my time more effectively. I think one of the most important things I learnt was to be humble – whether you’re doing well in life or you’ve just achieved a huge milestone, to always be humble to yourself and to the people around you. And that is the biggest achievement is being able to stay down to earth and to be respected for just being a nice person.
Favourite subject, and why?
History, probably because Ms Sheela, even though she was so tough on everyone, was such a great teacher and I found every lesson so interesting. I think her lessons have shaped my thinking towards learning and understanding/analysing social and political issues that I try to showcase in my work today

Any memorable stories you would like to share of your time at elc?
A highlight of the many great experiences I had in elc was representing the school at the 2006 FOBISSEA Games in Brunei. I am very proud of the numerous athletic records attained by our team which, in my opinion, put our school on the map at its debut appearance in the Games.

If you could go back in time and return to elc, what would you do differently?
I think I would go back and try to be more creative and involved in things – whether it be music or sports or the arts. I don’t think I utilised the opportunities that presented themselves to me enough. I was very focused on my studies but I should have taken up a hobby or a sport to balance out my life a little bit better. Once you’re out of education and you don’t necessarily have the facilities at your fingertips, you realise how much you take these things for granted.
Any advice to the current elc students?
Be more involved in school life and don’t take education for granted. Not just because your parents are paying a large sum of money for you to study and learn with an establishment of a high standard, but because school teaches you a lot more than the subjects that you’re being taught. Once you go to university or get a job, you’ll start to realise the skills you have or have developed, be they your writing skills, social skills or the way you’re able to present yourself in a specific manner to a client, have all been shaped by the place that you studied in for all these years.
