The Languages and Literature department celebrated UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day on Tuesday, the 10th of May, 2022. Children dressed up as their favourite fictional book character with Primary showing off their costumes in a Character Parade. Children participated in a wide variety of activities to mark the occasion: Lower Primary made their own non-fiction books and participated in the Bookie Monsters Read-out-Loud activity, whilst Upper Primary students designed colourful, appealing book covers and rewrote the ending of their favourite book. Designing literary murals and creating comic strips based on Jane Eyre and The Chronicles of Narnia kept Years 7 and 8 creatively busy; Year 9, on the other hand, took inspiration from George Orwell’s 1984 to create a script and drama scene satirising a global problem, followed by designing a poster advertising their production. Finally, IGCSE students created their own murder scene in the likeness of their chosen author – Arthur Conan Doyle – complete with a Machiavellian criminal, characters with intriguing back stories, multiple red herrings and a tense finale! Children also participated in the ‘Finders Keepers’ activity, held during break and lunch time, where exciting, must-read books were up for grabs…if children could find them, that is! All in all, a day full of joy…and wonderful surprises!
